He's just sitting here looking at the text message and the flowers and he's a little overwhelmed by how kind it is, after everything she's gone through by virtue of sticking with him. He's definitely going to pay her back somehow. ]
I know. It's pretty overwhelming... all of it.
I know you're pretty tough but just remember you don't have to deal with it alone, okay?
[ what he needs to understand is that she doesn't actually hold him accountable for the things that have happened, being "swept up by the typhoon" be damned. none of it's his fault, as far as she's concerned, and she's made her own choice to follow him anyway. she wanted to, and she still does.
so, luckily this conversation's over text, because this would be harder to be convincing with in person. she sighs his name softly at her phone, before typing back. ]
hey, i didn't send you flora just for you to get all worried about me. i'm fine, really.
[ or: she doesn't want to burden him with her own issues when she remembers him going through all that before she got here. not to mention the loss of someone else important to her. ]
i'm just glad you're okay.
[ it can't hurt to tell him that much, can it? she's so overwhelmingly glad she could tell him a thousand times and it still wouldn't be enough. ]
[ he promises, and yet knives' mere presence sends chills up her spine when she thinks about it. she trusts vash, but she doesn't trust him. not after what she saw. (and certainly not after he tried to kill her when she got here.)
eugh. while she'd love to see vash, she's only running on so much sleep and she knows better than to put herself in a position where he can worry over her. so... she has a plan opposite his. casually ignoring responding to the first part of his message so she can respond to the rest: ]
i've kind of already got enough information to sift through. i'll let you know when i'm ready, and we could go then?
in the meantime, maybe you could tell me about a few of your favorite spots instead? :)
[ trying to make this! positive! she even put a smiley face because she's definitely smiling irl haha! ]
[ Vash frowns at his phone. A part of him is more worried, not less, but at the same time they've been stuck together for a while and a lot has happened -- maybe, now that she has more of a choice, she just wants her space, without all of the danger and complications that come from him being in it. ]
Yeah, of course that's fine. :)
[ He, too, is definitely smiling irl. They're being so fun and normal right now. ]
There's a little bakery in the Bird Walk Promenade with lots of tasty things to try. It's called Fondante's Inferno. If you go in the afternoon Ms. Viola will give you everything they have left for almost nothing. If you go in the morning, there's brunch, too. The menu isn't as big as some places so it's not so overwhelming.
[ Attachment: map.png. There are a bunch of different locations circled, and most of them are bakeries. Vash's diet is 90% sugar. ]
[ vash, dammit, don't you dare take her wanting to avoid that walk the wrong way.
but, oh, that's actually really useful for her. she reads his little explanation and distracts herself with thoughts of sweets — she hasn't had too much since she's been here, but she's at least noticed they've been different and often more elaborate. no man's land can't exactly make the biggest and most amazing cakes.
looking over the map, she notices a... pattern. ]
that sounds great, actually. i'll make that the first one i visit then. and i'll bring you back something when i do, okay?
you're eating something other than sweets, though, right?
You don't have to! But I wouldn't say no...[ Maybe he can catch her and talk to her at least a little bit if she stops by. ]
Of I've been eating other stuff! [ Sometimes. ] There's hotdogs. And pizza. I had shrimp last week! Wolfwood was right, they do kind of taste like worms.
she hasn't tried shrimp yet but she is making A Face at her phone. if she knew what they looked like, she'd avoid them for that alone anyway. ]
thanks, now i know what not to eat. why are you eating things that taste like worms when we've come all the way here and finally gotten away from them anyway??
[ regardless, she wants to tack this on, just in case: ] just make sure to eat something else if you feel sick.
[ she doesn't know if she can trust him to stop eating sweets and pizza if he gets sick from them. ]
I just wanted to try it! They're pretty tasty if you peel off the shell and dip them in sauce. I haven't tried the stuff with tentacles yet...
I'll be careful, don't worry Meryl. :) [ He has never been careful in his life, but it's the thought that counts, right? ] If you find anything you like to eat, let me know! I was thinking of learning some new recipes.
But they come from the ocean! [ THE OCEAN, MERYL. But he'll stop as requested. ]
I don't cook a lot! I've been trying to get better at it... I only really did it before when I couldn't pay for meals but people do it for fun here. [ He also volunteers at a soup kitchen and he wants to be more useful. ] Do you want to try some?
coming from the ocean doesn't make them sound any better. a worm is a worm, vash. [ she'd rather try that 'fish' stuff she's heard about. none of this worm adjacent food. ]
that's right... i can't imagine having enough ingredients to do it for fun back home. [ people using food for fun? people wasting food? it's been wild for her to see. people can just snack because they feel like it here. ] but sure, i'd love to try some. what kind of food would you even make? you'd better not try to serve me shrimp.
okay, that sounds safe. i at least know what those are.
now you've got me curious about what your cooking tastes like. what's THE vash the stampede's style? sounds like a once in a lifetime chance, when i think about it like that...
[ look, how many people back in no man's land have given him enough of a chance to let him cook for them? she can't think it'd be many. ]

Unbeknownst to her, he's doing the exact same thing, staring at his phone with his brow furrowed and huffing out her name. She's so stubborn. ]
Nothing like that is ever going to happen here, I promise.
If you want to go for a walk together or something like that, I'd be happy to show you around the city.
[ Is he trying to get her in person so he can figure out what's going on with her? Maybe so. ]
